Who am I
I trade under my own name and work from home. I advertise in Yellow Pages only and although some work comes from that directory a lot now comes from recommendations and previous customers. I have a van laden with the most commonly needed spare parts and visit peoples homes by appointment to repair their broken appliances. I charge a small call-out fee but don't charge VAT. When you consider what the manufacturers charge for one of their engineers to make a home visit, you'll get to see why I am so very busy.
Pricing
I charge a small call-out fee, and unlike other major repairers I do not charge a rate by the hour. I prefer to estimate the parts needed to repair the appliance and add a small amount for labour. This is a much fairer way of pricing, and this gives much lower prices for you the customer.
For example a Hotpoint washing machine with no drum action. Hotpoint would charge £84.50 to call out (including 20 minutes on site) and estimate the parts would cost £17.88 and the fitting is included. The total bill from Hotpoint would be £102.38. Whereas I would only charge a £25.00 call-out, to cover my time in assessing the faulty appliance. The repair would cost a total of £58.50 (including the call-out fee). A saving of £43.88!!
