This new section will be devoted to my comments and thoughts on my repair business.

Let me tell you a little about myself
My name is Alan Hunter and although not "Sand Grown'un" I have lived in Blackpool since being 11 years old and regard Blackpool as my hometown. After serving in the Army for six years I left to start my own business. This began by attending a 10 month long DAPSE course based in Accrington. This gave me the vital training to become a self-employed Domestic Appliance Service Engineer, and a valued Certificate.
In those days the government had just put in place the Enterprise Allowance Scheme. This was to give new starters in new businesses a helping financial hand. I started 24 years ago and I won't pretend it wasn't a struggle at first even with the Enterprise Allowance Scheme. How new businesses get going these days without any help is difficult to comprehend.

Training and keeping up with the latest models of appliances has always been an important factor and I have been on many training courses for Hoover, Hotpoint, Creda washing machines and Brother microwave ovens. Also a lot of recent washing machine models are microprocessor controlled and when things go wrong they will show an error code. These can be shown in many ways, from how many complete turns a timer knob will click around, the lit LED's on the control panel to and error code showing on the display.
An important source of quality information has just been released in the publication of the UK Whitegoods Fault Code Guide. This will prove invaluable and includes the following makes, AEG, Amica, Ariston, Asco, Electra, Diplomat/Hygena, Baumatic, Beko, Belling, Bosch, Brandt/De Dietrich, Candy, Daewoo, Fagor, Indesit, Hotpoint, Creda, Electrolux, Gorenje, Haier, Hoover, LG, Matsui, Samsung, Servis, Siemens, Smeg, Whirlpool, and Zanussi (phew! such a lot).

A Cautionary Tale
I have just returned from a Hotpoint WD420G washing machine in Hambleton. The fault was reported as the drum not turning and a burning smell. On closer inspection I found the drum would stick occasionally and this had stopped the drum and drive belt from moving. However the motor pulley was still spinning and the friction caused the belt to burn and finally break. That must have been the "burning smell" they reported. They then admitted the washer dryer had lost one of its plastic paddles from the tub, and then had continued to use the washer.
This will have been when an article of
clothing must have entered the holes left
by the missing paddle.
Somehow the clothing got trapped between
the spinning stainless steel drum and the
outer tub. This then caused the drum to
stick and not turn.
So please check to see if your washing machine
has any loose or missing paddles in the drum.
If the answer is "yes", then get them replaced
before doing the next wash.
It could save you a load of money and hassle.

Anyone know what this means on a Samsung Washing Machine?
I was called to a Samsung B1245AS Silver Nano Washing Machine recently and after I had fixed it (by replacing the drain pump) we got talking. They apparently had found they could not work the machine and this starnge icon was showing on the display. They called out another repairer who explained it was the Child Lock, and if  you look closely you will see a smiling child. To get rid of this lock you have to press and hold down the [Rinse] + [Spin] buttons for 2-3 seconds, then the lamp child lock is set to off.

Cowboys and the "no call out fee" repairmen.

Nothing in life is free, which is why I, unlike many others, charge a small call out fee. I do not do free estimates, but will give you an accurate estimate of the repair before commencing work.
Sometimes customers are confused by repairmen who say "no call out charge", but there is a "labour" charge for the diagnostics. It seems to me that this charge is in fact a call out charge under another name?
You will find, as we do, that "no call out fee" usually means you will get stung with a large repair bill at the end, having been promised a low estimate in the first instance.
It is also quite obvious that engineers who actually don't charge anything at all for call out (or diagnostics) will in fact have to recoup thier losses by charging more on the jobs that do go ahead.
